Moms, what do you think?
Crystal had some more great questions on my last blog, again I thought I'd post my answer here for everyone to read and also get some of your opinions on the matter! You can read her questions here.
The Maxi Cosi Mico is $169.99 here in the states. I got mine at the local boutique, Ding Bats, but you can buy them online and other Maxi Cosi dealers.
My pediatrician is very practical. He understands the delicate balance between what's best for baby and what is truly practical in everyday life. I love this about him.
Yes, he did say that babies (especially the first 12 weeks) should not be left in their car seat for extended periods of time. But he was quick to point out that he means leaving them in there for hours on end, like sleeping over night in it. His main concern with leaving the baby in the car seat too long was the lack on human touch. Babies need to be held and cuddled! That is why I love my Hotsling so much. I can have Lucy close to me and still get things done.
He said that there have also been studies that newborns can have trouble getting enough oxygen to their limbs if they are left in their car seat too long. Just like adult, babies need to stretch and move after sitting awhile!
Dr. S never said anything about it damaging or being harmful to their little spines. We definitely used the car seat more than the bassinet option (Lucy did not like riding around in the bassinet) and she is perfect. She is a very strong baby! She rolled over, sat up, and crawled very early. So I don't think it had any effect on her strength or he spine. I think it has a lot to do with your lifestyle. That's just what worked for us.
Just as the bassinet is en vogue in Europe, the car seat is what everyone uses here. I do think it has the most to do with lifestyle. The American way of life vs. the European. Is one better than the other? I have no idea. I think you should do what works for you and your family.
We have taken several road trips down to Dallas with Lucy and she has done so well in her seat. Its about a 4.5 hour trip for us, so we usually stop half way and let her stretch out and move around. She is a great traveler and seems very comfortable in her Maxi Cosi.
I hope this answers your questions... Keep them coming! Also, let me know what you finally decide on buying for baby R!!! Good Luck!
